Training Update – Sept 21, 2024

Running Training

I have been slacking in the training update department, but sometimes life doesn’t always go to planned schedules.

The heatwave is finally over and I was able to log 13 miles in that last week or so. Unfortunately I’ve had another life issue come up that has prevented me from getting back into the groove.

My next race is coming up next weekend (Sept 29) and I had been pushing for a sub 30. I did a test 5k on the course for the race and unfortunately it looks like I am just a few minutes off the pace. It is unlikely that I will make it, but I will try by best. Today’s run did get me a 5k PR of 33m 12s which shatters my previous 5k PR of 36m 08s!

Here are today’s PRs:

My logged mileage for Sept so far:

Finally, today’s run:

Strength Training

My strength training has been non-existent for the past couple of weeks and that really is a shame. I don’t know why I have such a difficult time sticking to strength training. I know it will help me achieve my goals in running, but I always find some reason to skip it. I have done some soul searching and some information searching recently because not workout out has been weighing on me and I am running out of time for the strength goals I has set. After looking at what some professional strength trainers have been saying recently, as well as some research studies that are coming out soon, I have decided the best plan for now is to hit strength 2x/week with full body workouts rather than targeted groups. 2x seems more manageable and according to the physiologists that I have been looking into, will be sufficient to cover the curve pattern that muscle growth takes after a workout (assuming max load).

I am working on the plan now and I just have to find that spark to maintain it.

Upcoming race changes

I have decided to skip the Silver Strand race coming up in November. I will be updating the race calendar to reflect the change. I will also update the calendar with the next race I plan on doing after the one next weekend. That race will be at the end of December and will be the same event that I did as my first race last year. I will most definitely hit sub 30 for that race. Last year I did that race in 40min, so it will be awesome to have shaved 10+ minutes in 1 year.

I am also seriously considering beginning training for a half after next weekend’s race. If I decide to go for it, the half will be next spring. I am only considering it for the bragging rights of having done a half (I have zero desire to do a full, even for bragging rights). I am not a long distance runner, but I will sacrifice one time to say that I accomplished it.
