Average Joe 5k – San Diego
This morning (Sept 29, 2024) I ran a 5k race down in the beautiful Mission Bay area of San Diego. Just across the bay from Sea World at Crown Point park. It was a fantastic morning for a race. Average temperature was 66 degrees during the run and the sun was behind the marine layer the entire time. Nice and cool. I was fueled well and feeling great. The race has a unique result/medal format. Not only do they award medals for the top finishers, but the Average Joe in each category also receives a medal. The Average Joe/Jane is the person that finished in the middle of the pack.
My result, while not meeting my original goal of a sub-30 minute finish, was a personal record! I finished this morning’s 5k in 31mins 40 secs. I ran this same course last weekend and did it in 33:23. My previous 5k record was 36 mins and change. So in the last couple of months I have improved my 5k time by 5 mins. which is awesome. I know that my sub-30 will happen. My next race will be in December so there is plenty of time to hit that goal. I also finished 3rd in my age category. Yes there is only 4 in my category, but still a medal. The first 2 finishers in my category are professional runners and finished 10 minutes ahead of me.
